CLUB HISTORY
In 1947 the Upper Ferntree Gully Tennis Club began with one sand court situated behind the Royal Hotel.
It was two years later that two en-tout-cas courts were built on the Talaskia Rd site.
On February 3rd 1949 the first minutes were recorded at a public meeting held in the UFTG Fire Station.
The first committee of 11 members was elected. Mr. A. R. Tonkin was elected as the club president.
Until 1966 the club had been sharing the football clubrooms. In this year the club had grown so much a third court was constructed. Along with this a small one roomed clubhouse was built next to the courts.
During this year Victoria was hit by a severe drought and devoted members hand-watered the courts to ensure they remained playable.
By the late seventies the club had over 180 members with 11 mid-week ladies teams!
The 70's was a great era for Australian tennis with our Davis Cup success and big tennis stars such as Newcombe, Macnamara and Macnamee all inspiring people to join their local club and have a hit.
The club had to turn people away during this time as it could not accommodate this many players with just 3 courts.
In 1976 thoughts turned to better facilities and plans began for a new Pavilion.
The user groups at that time were The Foothills Hockey Club, Tecoma Cricket Club, the Guides and Scouts and the U.F.T.G. Tennis Club.
The tennis club was able to raise sufficient funds to have the clubrooms included as part of the new building and the Talaskia Reserve Pavillion was officially opened on 2nd August 1980, by the Shire President Mr.Pulford.
Today we don't have as many members as we did in the 70's but we have several teams playing in the night tennis and mid week ladies competition
Our junior competition and coaching is still going strong, with our resident coach Marcos Ahumada.
The club now has 9 life members, many dedicated, active members and a strong hardworking committee (including one junior representative).
We are proud of our community involvement and long history.
